Pulpit Announcement:

The growth of our relationship with La Sagrada Familia Parish depends to a great extent upon our awareness of the life and changing needs of the people of the parish and upon our response to those bonds of relationship.  You will note a story in the bulletin of how the experience of visiting the parish impacted the life of one woman from this archdiocese. Your support of La Sagrada Familia Parish is essential to the support of our archdiocesan priests who serve there and to the continuity of the ministries that empower our sisters and brothers and help to transform their lives. Now, our support is even more urgent as the people begin recovering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy that destroyed homes and many crops that farmer’s rely on to earn a living and feed their families. We encourage you to please be generous in your response. Thank you!

Bulletin Text (full version):

I have family in the Dominican Republic. I lived with them for four days in 2008. I could not speak their language and they could not speak mine. They fed me, we played dominoes, and we played baseball. I write to them once a year. They write back. A friend helps me with the translation.  Because of my visit to La Sagrada Familia, I try not to take anything for granted in my life. Food, electricity, plumbing, health care, education, and jobs are all very precious there. Scarcity has helped the people be resilient and resourceful—it seems to me that they know how to find and hold joy better than those of us who have much more. Their generous spirit is unmistakable. I remember them often in prayer—it seems the least I can do.
