What Is Mission?

In his letter, Mission of the Redeemer, Pope John Paul II reminded us that the Church by its very nature is missionary. Drawing on the richness of the mission documents of Vatican II and on all that has contributed to the further development of the mission agenda our vision of mission includes the following:

  1. Mission is central to the nature and identity of the Church.
  2. The mission agenda includes but is not limited to proclamation of the Gospel as well as response to human need, interreligious dialogue, transformation of unjust structures and safe-guarding of creation.
  3. As members of a universal as well as a local Church we are called to live in solidarity with our sisters and brothers across the world.

The Catholic Church of Southeastern Wisconsin has a long and rich history of mission centeredness. In an effort to further strengthen that mission spirit in response to the needs of the 21st century, the Global Mission Network of Southeastern Wisconsin invites your participation in mission in accord with the words of the Mission of the Redeemer:

“In a world where the lessening of the distance makes the world increasingly smaller, the Church’s communities ought to be connected to each other, exchanging vital energies and resources, and committing themselves as a group to the one and common vision of proclaiming and living the Gospel.” (#62)

We are all missionaries! By cultivating relationships of solidarity with our sisters and brothers around the world, we are building the Kingdom of God. It is in these encounters of giving and receiving that we are transformed.

We invite you to join us on this journey as we deepen our missionary spirits!
