4-13-25 Pilgrim Update: Blessed Holy Thursday & Holy Week

Blessed Palm Sunday & Holy Week!

This Thursday, April 17, is Holy Thursday, when we celebrate the Mass of the Lord's Supper.

In this celebration, we remember Jesus' last supper when He gave us the Eucharist and the priesthood. He gave us priests to help us "do this in remembrance of me" at every Mass.

Holy Thursday is also the beginning of the Easter Triduum, the summit (or high point) of our Liturgical Year, which begins on Holy Thursday and continues through the Easter Vigil.

Instead of our usual Thursday night Formation Session, we encourage your Pilgrim Group to go to your parish's Holy Thursday Service. Consider inviting a friend or loved one to join you for this beautiful celebration!

Save the date for our last Livestream Emmaus 90 Formation Session on Easter Thursday, April 24, where Archbishop Jeffrey Grob will help us to reflect on the question, "Where do we go from here?"

To receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation once more before Easter, Find a Confession time here

God, please give us courage and an open door to invite those we are walking with to join us in our celebration of Holy Week and Easter!

This Week in Emmaus 90

This Holy Week, we continue to "set out at once on mission." We strive to share the good news and "walk with one," perhaps inviting them to join us for Holy Thursday or Easter Mass.

Daily Prayer with Scripture

In this week's Scriptures, we walk with Jesus through the last hours of his earthly life. Use the Prayer Prompt inside the front cover of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook with these Daily Scriptures.

Our Next Formation Session

REMINDER: NO FORMATION SESSION this Thursday, April 17th, because we encourage you to go to your parish's Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper with your pilgrim group.

Watch your inbox for a bonus message on Holy Thursday from Bishop James Powers of the Diocese of Superior.

Our next live Formation Session will be NEXT Thursday, April 24th, when we're blessed to be joined by Archbishop Jeffrey Grob, who will help us reflect on "Where do we go from here?"

Join us live at 7pm on Thursday, April 24th or get the recording any other time at our Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Formation Sessions Page.

Last Week's Formation Session

Watch Chenele Shaw's session on "How do we "walk with one"? HERE or at the link below.

Chenele offers the following questions for your Pilgrim group discussions:

  1. Who is one person in your life you feel God may be inviting you to walk with more intentionally? What’s one simple next step you can take to accompany them this week? See p. 138-139 of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook for ideas.
  2. When has someone “walked with you” in a way that helped you grow in your faith? What can you learn from that experience as you strive to accompany others?

She also shares these resources:

  • Before Gethsemane Initiative - Resources and formation tools rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, addressing racism and xenophobia with theological depth.
  • Anti-Depressing Podcast - Available on Spotify & Apple Podcasts. A space for honest conversations about faith, mental health, and pop culture.
  • On Earth as It Is in Heaven – A book we’ve used to lead small groups through reflections on Eucharist, justice, and healing.
  • A Tool for more reflection on Thresholds of Conversion – A helpful framework for understanding where people are spiritually and how to accompany them.

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from an anonymous pilgrim:

"So glad to have this opportunity to grow in faith with the Lord. I recently returned to practicing my faith after ten years away. Happy to report crippling anxiety is no longer an issue keeping me from Mass. Thanks to books, secular and specifically Catholic, and your Emmaus 90 prayers -- and the prayers of my parish -- and the formation advice, I have been rapidly healing. Very glad to be back with new-found faith and very grateful for Emmaus 90!"

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

4-6-25 Your Pilgrim Update: The Fifth Week of Lent

The Game is Won in the 4th Quarter

God is not done. As our first reading from Isaiah reminds us, God is doing something new.

God, please give us the grace to perceive it and to finish this Lent strong.

This week, Wednesday, April 9, Archbishop Grob has asked that we observe a Day of Reconciliation, Reparation, and Fasting. On Wednesday:

  • We are invited to the Sacrament of Reconciliation on this day, where confessions will be heard across the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for twelve continuous hours. See locations
  • We are asked to make small acts of reparation on this day for sins against those who are the most vulnerable, those who suffer from exclusion, indifference, poverty, hunger and the tragedy of war. Reparation is “making amends for a wrong done or for an offense, especially for sin, which is an offense against God.” (CCC, glossary)
  • We are asked to fast (think: like Ash Wednesday or Good Friday). Consider offering up your fast for those who are most vulnerable and suffering.

3-30-25 Your Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Update: Laetare Sunday & The Fourth Week of Lent

Half Way to Easter

Laetare Sunday (that's today) is the Sunday half-way through Lent, when we look forward in joyful hope to what the Lord accomplishes for us. It's a Sunday of hope in the Jubilee Year of Hope.

Half-way through Lent is a good time to pause and reflect on where we've been and where we want to be when we get to Easter:

  • How has your time in prayer helped you to grow in deeper relationship with God and awareness of the ways God speaks to you?
  • What are you noticing God revealing to you through the Scriptures and in prayer? Have there been any themes or patterns?
  • What do you need for this 2nd half of your journey? Ask God for the grace you need to persevere until Easter, or to begin again.

This Sunday is also the beginning of Safe Environment Awareness Week - a week when we focus on keeping children safe from abuse and pray for healing for all those affected by abuse.

Lord, on this Laetare Sunday, please heal all of us affected by abuse and restore unto us the joy and freedom You promise the children of God. Help us to see You as You truly are, to receive Your healing love, and to love each other as You love us.

This Week in Emmaus 90

This week we begin the 4th movement of our journey with the disciples on the road to Emmaus: set out at once on mission. We pray for grace that our encounter with Jesus will set our hearts on fire to share the good news.

Last Week's Formation Session

Watch Fr. John LoCoco's session on "How do we enter more deeply into the Mass? HERE or at the link below.

Fr. LoCoco suggested these questions for your Pilgrim Group:

  1. How does my personal preparation before Mass (prayer, recollection, spiritual reading, etc.) affect my experience of the Eucharist? What practical steps can I take to be more spiritually disposed?
  2. The Mass is the re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary. How does this reality impact the way I participate at Mass?
  3. The Church calls us to "full, conscious, and active participation" in the liturgy. In light of this, how can I grow in interior participation even when external distractions arise?

Read Sacrosanctum Concilium paragraphs 5-14.

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from an anonymous pilgrim:

I signed up for Emmaus 90 a few months after I lost my Papa, the grief I was experiencing was too much to bear and counseling wasn't helping. At that time somebody handed me a flyer for Emmaus 90 in our church in Kenosha and so I signed up.

Week 1 of Emmaus 90 - Sr. Miriam talked about Healing the Whole Person, and I knew right away that it was what I needed. True enough, through Emmaus 90 and Healing the Whole Person, I discovered that God not only wanted a relationship with me but He wants to heal my brokenness, so that I will be able to serve God's purpose and become a blessing to others.

I am soooo grateful for the way it led me to Him! Thank You so much!!!

My journey hasn't stopped since Emmaus 90 - 2024. I continue to seek the Lord and his graces.

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

Please consider sharing a story about how God has blessed you or your Pilgrim Group through your Emmaus 90 journey.

Day of Reconciliation,

Reparation, & Fasting

Archbishop Grob has asked that we observe April 9, 2025, as a Day of Reconciliation, Reparation, and Fasting. On this day:

3-23-25 Your Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Update: The Third Week of Lent

The Lord is Kind & Merciful

He pardons all your sins, heals all your ills, delivers your life from the pit, surrounds you with love and compassion, fills your days with good things. He is slow to anger and abounding in kindness. As a father has compassion on his children, so he has compassion on us. (How do we know? See Psalm 103.)

Let's repent of what's been in the way, open our hearts wide to receive as much of his love as we can, and share that love with others. After all, he's the good Gardener, willing to do everything we need to bear good fruit.

However your Lent is going, know that we're praying for you to get to know and love our Lord who gives everything for love of you, and who longs to give himself to you in the Eucharist.

This Week in Emmaus 90

This is our 3rd of 3 weeks in the 3rd movement of our journey with the disciples on the road to Emmaus: recognize him in the breaking of the bread. We pray for grace to enter more deeply into communion with our Lord in the Mass.

Daily Prayer with Scripture

This week's Scriptures help us prepare to participate in the Mass more fully. Use the Prayer Prompt inside the front cover of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook with these Daily Scriptures.

Our Next Formation Session

Our next live Formation session will be Thursday, March 27th, when we're blessed to be joined by Fr. John LoCoco.  Who will help us reflect on "How do we enter more deeply into the Mass?" Fr. John LoCoco, a National Eucharistic Preacher, holds licenses in Dogmatic Theology and Canon Law. He currently serves as the Archdiocese of Milwaukee's Judicial Vicar and Parochial Administrator for St. John Vianney Parish in Brookfield.

Join us live at 7pm on Thursday, March 27th, or get the recording any other time at our Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Formation Sessions Page.

Last Week's Formation Session

Watch Fr. Christopher Klusman's session on "How is the Mass our source and summit? HERE or at the link below.

Fr. Christopher suggests these questions for your Pilgrim Group:

  1. What does it mean that we are having a National Eucharistic Revival?  If you can name 1 thing that you like about it.
  2. Watch the video, “The Veil Removed”. (Even if you have watched it before, it is worth watching again). Share 1 thing about how this video has impacted you about the Mass.
  3. What does it me that the Mass is our "Source and Summit"?
  4. Is it difficult for you to understand that the Mass is our "Source and Summit"?  If so what makes it difficult?  What might help you overcome that difficulty?

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from an anonymous pilgrim:

"Last year I registered for Emmaus 90 and was very excited to get started and try to find a small group. I watched the first few zoom sessions and was extremely inspired. Then life happened, I was no longer available on Thursday evenings, and I did not have a small group. I had many excuses as to why I did not have the time to finish. This year I am doing it all, daily prayer, small group and weekly formation sessions.

The past 12 weeks have been extremely insightful and inspirational. Every Thursday I feel like I am on fire wanting to share with the whole world what I learned that evening.

I wish I would have finished last year... As I now know...God is waiting for all of us to be present and spend time with Him, Emmaus 90 has helped me realize He is wonderful to spend time with.  Don’t give up it is so worth it, it is not to late."

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

3-17-25 Your Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Update: The Second Week of Lent

Let's Stay

I love Peter's reaction to the Transfiguration--he gets a glimpse of Jesus in his full glory for the first time, and in awe decides that they should build some tents and stay. In those mountaintop moments where I have glimpsed Jesus, I want to stay too.

But if we continue reading after today's Sunday gospel (or any of the gospel accounts of the Transfiguration), we see Jesus come down from that glory right into the midst of our mess and doubts.

It's as if Jesus invites us to see who he really is in order to fill us so we can go out and bring him to those who do not see.

Our prayer for you this week is that you can stay with him, not only on the mountain top in prayer, but when he leads you out to those who need him most.

This Week in Emmaus 90

We continue in our 3rd movement of our journey with the disciples on the road to Emmaus: recognize him in the breaking of the bread. We pray for grace to recognize Jesus truly present with us in every Mass.

  2. Visio Divina with the two versions of the Supper at Emmaus

    1. 1st Version painted in 1601

    2. 2nd Version painted in 1606
What stirs in my heart as I gaze upon the Caravaggio paintings?
What colors, gestures and movements capture my heart?

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from an anonymous pilgrim:

"Emmaus 90 was a great experience in 2024, so I signed on again for this year’s journey. I’m so grateful for the structure that encourages me take time to pray in a very personal way and using scripture as part of my reflection time. I’m also happy to consistently be praying for many others with my intentions, which were haphazard before this.

The hardest part and the most important part to me is the few minutes of time dedicated to just being with Jesus — so little time, but it’s so hard to shut off concerns of the day and just “be” with the one who loves me so.

Thank you for this chance to grow in faith with a very small group of companions on the always-continuing journey to grow in relationship with Jesus."

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

How does Jesus fulfill our longing that he stay with us?

3-9-25 Your Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Update: The First Week of Lent

You Are Not Alone

Have you ever noticed that when Jesus goes into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the enemy, he was filled by the Holy Spirit and led by the Spirit (Luke 4:1).

Jesus was not alone in the desert. The Holy Spirit was with him. Like Jesus, you are not alone in these 40 days of Lent. He will never leave you nor abandon you. He fights for you.

When the temptations come and the lies from the enemy get to you, remember that Jesus is with you. Ask him for help.

We're here for you too. Know that we’re praying for you!

This Week in Emmaus 90

We're shifting into our 3rd movement of our journey with the disciples on the road to Emmaus: they recognize him in the breaking of the bread. We begin with their desire (and our desire) that Jesus "stay with us" (Luke 24:29).

Daily Prayer with Scripture

This week's Scriptures speak of God's desire to stay with us, to bring us deeper into his love, deeper into communion. Use the Prayer Prompt inside the front cover of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook with these Daily Scriptures.

Our Next Formation Session

Our next live Formation session will be Thursday, March 13th, when we're blessed to be joined by Sr. Miriam James Heidland, SOLT, who will help us reflect on "How does Jesus fulfill our longing that he 'stay with us'?"

You really don't want to miss this one! Join us live at 7pm on Thursday, March 13th, or get the recording any other time at our Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Formation Sessions Page.

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from Waukesha County:

"Several of us in our Pilgrim Group had never learned how to pray with Scripture before Emmaus 90. We didn't know how much God could speak into our lives through Scripture. It's been beautiful gift to grow together in prayer. Thank you."

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

Ask God to Help

Fr. Malachy reminds us as we enter into Lent in this Jubilee Year of Hope that we have hope, not because of what we've done, but because of who God is and who we are before Him.

As we enter into Ash Wednesday and Lent, ask God to show you who He is and remind you who you are.

Who do you know who needs this message? Please share it with them. (You have our permission and encouragement to forward this email.)

Know that we’re praying for you! (Yes, you! Everyone who's seeing this message!)

If you haven't already, see p. 69 of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook for help reflecting on your journey and your plan for Lent.

No livestream formation session this Thursday March 6

This is so you can participate in your parish's Ash Wednesday Mass with your Pilgrim Group. If you choose to gather for a Pilgrim Group Discussion this week, consider discussing the video message above from Fr. Malachy Joseph Napier, CFR.

Fr. Malachy suggested the following questions for reflection:

  1. Where have I experienced the Father seeing me in ways that maybe no one else has?
  2. Where have I been striving or maybe living on the surface, so that others would see me the way I want them to see me?
  3. What would it be like to really let myself be seen?

Daily Prayer with Scripture

This week we pray with daily Mass readings that usher us into the Lenten season. Use the Prayer Prompt inside the front cover of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook with these Daily Scriptures.

3-2-25 Your Emmaus Pilgrim Update: T-minus 3 Days until Lent

Let's Begin Again

Right before Jesus heads out for 40 days in the desert, the Father blesses him in his baptism. As the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus, the Father speaks over him: "This is my beloved son, in whom I delight." (Matthew 3:13-4:2)

He receives the Father's love, which strengthens him against the attacks of the enemy, who questions his identity in the temptations in the desert ("if you are the son of God...")

As you prepare to head into Lent, how will you let God bless you and remind you who you are?

How can what you choose to "give up" and "take up" for Lent help you to grow in deeper relationship with God, and deeper rootedness in God's love for you?

Know that we’re praying for you!

Ready or not, Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and Lent begins. Invite your friends to find an Ash Wednesday Mass Here.

  2. How might the title “Divine Bridegroom” expand our sense of the Church and God’s desire to “unite all things in Christ” (Eph 1:10)?

2-27-25 Emmaus 90 Formation Tonight with Fr. John Burns @ 7pm CST!

February 27: Livestream Formation Session at 7:00PM

How do Scriptures about weddings and wine refer to Jesus?

As we continue through the second movement of our journey "Jesus Interprets the Scriptures" we focus on references to weddings and wine and how they point us to Jesus Christ the Divine Bridegroom and giver of new wine--a symbol of life and blessing.

Tonight we are so very blessed to be joined by Fr. John Burns. Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in 2010, Fr. John has served as a pastor and adjunct professor of theology. He is the founder of Friends of the Bridegroom, an apostolate dedicated to the renewal of the Church through the renewal of women’s religious life.  Fr. Burns will help us reflect on "How do Scriptures about weddings and wine refer to Jesus?" Prepare to have your mind blown.

Fr. John suggests the following questions for your pilgrim group discussions:

  1. At Cana, Jesus is revealed as the Divine Bridegroom. Have you prayed with that title of Christ before? If not, how might you begin to do so?
  2. How might the title "Divine Bridegroom" expand our sense of the Church and God’s desire to “unite all things in Christ” (Eph 1:10)?

2-23-25 - Your Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Update: The Battle of Prayer

The Struggle Is Real

We’ve heard from several of you this week that it’s been especially hard to keep showing up for your daily prayer with Scripture, or that when you get there it’s been hard to not be distracted. Some of you have been feeling discouraged or even tempted to give up–because you feel too far behind.

If you find yourself wearied by the battle, we want you to know that you are not alone. The Catechism of the Catholic Church has a whole section on The Battle of Prayer

What you are experiencing is a normal part of growth in the spiritual life.

That's right. The reality that it's gotten harder to pray is one indication that you are growing. If you ask Jesus to help you persevere through the battle and you keep striving to show up for Him in prayer, your relationship with the Lord will be strengthened--he will strengthen you.

If you’re in that place right now, remember:

  • God is looking on you as his beloved child.
  • He will never give up on you, and he is always there to help you to begin again. His grace is renewed each morning so great is his faithfulness (Lam 3:22-23)
  • You're not alone. We're praying for you!
  • You're in good company--even the greatest Saints struggled to pray.
  • Just like lifting a heavier weight will strengthen your muscles, persevering in prayer when it's hard will strengthen you.
  • Showing up for prayer is your gift to God, what happens when you get there is his gift to you!

We encourage you to:

  • Let go what has passed (like the days you missed praying or journaling).
  • Tell Jesus "where you're at" right now.
  • Ask him to forgive you for the ways you've fallen short.
  • Ask him to give you the grace, the strength to begin again.
  • Begin again today.

Know that we’re praying for you!

Our Next Formation Session

We're blessed to be joined by Fr. John Burns, a priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee who has served as a pastor and adjunct professor of theology. He received a doctorate in moral theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, and preaches missions and directs retreats throughout the country. Fr. Burns is the author of Lift Up Your Heart: A 10-Day Personal Retreat with St. Francis de Sales. He founded Friends of the Bridegroom, an apostolate dedicated to the renewal of the Church through the renewal of women’s religious life. Fr. Burns will help us reflect on "How do Scriptures about weddings and wine refer to Jesus?" Prepare to have your mind blown.

For Your Pilgrim Group

See discussion questions on p. 12 of your Guidebook. Dr. Healy also suggested the following questions:

  1. Do you recognize in yourself a spiritual hunger that can be satisfied by God alone?
  2. What are some misguided ways that you (or people in general) seek to fill that hunger?
  3. Why did Jesus call Himself the bread of life?
  4. How is He the bread of life for you?

In her talk, Dr. Healy  refers to these Scripture passages

  • Not by bread alone - Deuteronomy 8:3

  • The bread of angels - Psalm 78:23-25

  • Bread from heaven - Wisdom 16:30-21

  • God’s word is bread - Isaiah 55:1-3

  • God’s wisdom is bread - Proverbs 9:1-6

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from the Northwoods of the Diocese of Superior:

"Our small group is unique since we are all women in the same family. To each other we are mothers, aunties, sisters, sisters-in-law, nieces, daughters, or cousins. The discussion question about committing to meditating on God’s Word like the tree in Psalm 1:3 opened up some really beautiful conversation.

Our family is from the Northwoods so forestry is part of our family culture and traditions, offering an in-depth look at how we can support each other in our Emmaus 90 journey.

Trees in a natural forest grow together in community by interconnecting root networks sharing nutrients, chloroplast cells, and environmental information along mycelium networks in the microbiome that resemble social networks.

We tell each other what we need from each other and offer help/encouragement in prayer or practical resources. Over the weeks, our family bonds are being reaffirmed with joy and honesty through the small group community we have created. Jesus is walking with all of us, and is slowly spreading through the rest of the family."

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

2-16-25 - Your Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Update: Jesus has come to fight

God's Rescue Mission

God, in a plan of sheer goodness, created us out of love for love. He created everything good to draw us into loving communion with himself. We were created for love.

When we look around at the brokenness in our world, it's clear that something went wrong. We have an enemy who hates us. He entices us to believe the lies that God/God's way isn't good enough, that we aren't good enough, and that we would be better off if we choose something else. When we choose something other than God and His way for us, we fall into the enemy's trap. We have been captured by sin.

God loves us too much to leave us to anguish in the enemy's trap. Jesus has come to fight--to defeat--the enemy, to rescue us from his trap, and to bring us back into loving communion with God. Jesus comes to rescue us.

Jesus will not force us to receive the salvation He offers. It's as if Jesus has gotten down on one knee to propose, "I have given everything for you. Will you be Mine and will you let Me be yours?" How will you respond?

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we get to tell Jesus we're sorry for grasping at something other than Him/His way and ask Him to come rescue us. He forgives us and gives us grace to come back into communion with Him.

As Fr. John Paul Mitchell reminds us in this week's Formation Session, every page of Scripture points to Jesus and His coming to save us. Let's let Him.

If it's been a while since you've been to confession:

Know that we're praying for you.

We're so very blessed to be joined by Dr. Mary Healy, professor of Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, bestselling author, and international speaker. She is one of the first three women ever to serve on the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and in January, Pope Francis appointed her as a consultor to the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Dr. Healy will help us reflect on "How do Scriptures about bread refer to Jesus?"

For Your Pilgrim Group

Fr. John suggested the following questions for your discussion group

  1. The story of Sacred Scripture is our story. How does coming to see the connections between the Old and New Testaments, and God’s Providential hand in all of it, affect your sense of God’s provision and care for your life?

  2. St. Paul exhorts us: “Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.” (1 Cor 14:1) Although you may not be called to work mighty signs and wonders in God’s name like the prophet Moses, how might the Lord be calling you to embrace the prophetic roles of intercession and of identification with the suffering?

  3. How can you commit to meditating on God’s Word in the week ahead so as to become “like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” (Psalm 1:3)

In his talk, Fr. John refers to these Scripture Passages.

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from Oak Creek:

"My husband and I have truly found spiritual inspiration during our Emmaus 90 moments together. It has been a gift to read together first thing in the morning and share our thoughts and prayers with each other... and also our adult children!

We have been randomly sharing/texting some of the beautiful Emmaus 90 daily scriptures with our kids and receiving sweet responses from them! Also the Thursday speakers have just been amazing.... soooo relatable and reflective for us to share deeper with each other our deeper desires to serve! Thank you and God's blessings to all on this glorious Emmaus 90 journey!"

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

2-13-25 - Emmaus 90 Formation tonight with Fr. John Paul Mitchell @ 7pm CST!

February 13: Livestream Formation Session at 7:00PM (CST)!

How do Moses and the prophets refer to Jesus?

This week we move into the second movement of our journey "Jesus Interprets the Scriptures." On the road to Emmaus, beginning with Moses and the prophets, Jesus interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures (Luke 24:27). He retells the stories they already know and helps the disciples see them as they never have before. May the Lord help us see with new eyes and may our hearts burn within us!

Tonight, we're blessed to be joined by Fr. John Paul Mitchell. He currently serves as the Director of Propaedeutic Formation at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary and teaches Scripture at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology. He received his doctorate in biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and grew up in Wauwatosa. Fr. John Paul will help us reflect on "How do Moses and the prophets refer to Jesus?"

For Your Pilgrim Group

Fr. John Paul asks you to reflect on the following questions:

  1. The story of Sacred Scripture is our story. How does coming to see the connections between the Old and New Testaments, and God’s Providential hand in all of it, affect your sense of God’s provision and care for your life?
  2.   2-9-25 - Pilgrim Update: When Jesus gets in your boat

Are You Willing to Drop Your Nets?

Today's Gospel passage (Luke 5:1-11) is a favorite of mine. Have you ever noticed that the fisherman have already disembarked when Jesus gets into the boat belonging to Simon [aka Peter]?

That's right. Jesus got into Simon's boat when Simon wasn't even in it. When I imagine Simon responding to Jesus' request to take the boat out again, I see him almost roll his eyes with a resigned sigh. It's almost as if Simon is thinking, "Ok preacher, if you say so, but I know fish, and right now it's not going to happen." Then, I imagine Jesus laughing in delight seeing the fishermen utterly shocked in surprise at the catch of their life.

Jesus is not just Master of religious things. Jesus is Lord of the Universe, the God of history, the One who knows and loves you and everything that's important to you. And he wants you.

He invites you to follow him into the great adventure of helping others encounter his love, to live fully alive in confidence and freedom as his beloved.

Jesus changed the world with a couple of fishermen. (Seems like maybe they weren't even good fishermen--have you ever noticed that the Scriptures only record them catching fish when Jesus is around?)

Wanna see what he can do with you?  Ask him to help you drop your nets and follow his lead.

  • When has Jesus surprised you by "getting into your boat" when you weren't expecting?
    • Not sure he's done that? Ask him to surprise you.
  • What stops you from dropping your nets?
    • Ask him for help to follow him.

We're praying for you and your pilgrim groups as you strive to live in authentic Christian Community--especially that you will let him get in your boat, surprise you, and lead you into the adventure.

This week's story comes from a pilgrim from Sheboygan County:

"I am in tears. For about a year, the Holy Spirit has been inviting me to embrace community. Pete’s formation session this week articulated, again and again, exactly what I needed to hear. The Lord's timing is so very perfect! Thank you for helping us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit’s movement. The goodness and love of Jesus never cease to amaze me. It is consuming and overwhelming to realize how much He loves us. A love so deep that we cannot even begin to comprehend it."

2-2-25 Pilgrim Update: Blessed Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

Blessed Feast of the Presentation of the Lord!

As we continue to strive to recognize Jesus drawing near, there is much to learn from today's Gospel story of the Presentation of our Lord:

  • We learn that Jesus comes in humility and simplicity - in this case, as a baby with his family
  • We learn from Simeon that a key to recognizing him is striving to live a faithful life, waiting, watching, and listening for the movements of the Holy Spirit
  • We learn from both Simeon and Anna that encountering Jesus leads to giving thanks and sharing the good news with others.

We're so proud of you for seeking the Lord drawing near in humility and simplicity through your daily prayer with Scripture and in the Examen of your daily life. We're praying for you that you grow in your ability to recognize all the ways Jesus speaks to you and to share the good news with those around you.

We feel honored to be a part of this beautiful community of Emmaus 90 pilgrims of hope striving to grow in relationship with our Lord. Thank you for walking with us!

Last week Fr. James Kubicki, SJ helped us reflect on the question: How do I Recognize Jesus Drawing Near? Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24, when we feel worry and discouragement, we can turn to “fix our eyes on Jesus.” Your daily prayer with Scripture and Examen help you to recognize Him revealing himself with you in the midst of your daily life.

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from a pilgrim from the Basilica of St. Josaphat:

"I began Emmaus 90 last year as a help in getting myself spiritually ready for the Eucharistic Congress, but it turned into so much more. I found myself excited for my prayer time, and found delving into scripture to be so satisfying. Also, being a relative newcomer to Milwaukee, I found some opportunity in listening to some of the more local speakers. It is truly a blessing, and I appreciate the Archdiocese coordinating it!"

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

How Do I Recognize Him?

In all places and at all times God draws near to us (Catechism 1), so how do we recognize him? And, what does that mean for you? for your life? Tonight, Fr. James Kubicki, SJ, helps us to explore these important questions.

Fr. Kubicki suggests the following questions for your Pilgrim Group this week:

  1. What are some obstacles to my meeting and recognizing Jesus in my daily life?
  2. What does Jesus' interaction with the disciples teach me about how to walk with others on their faith journey?

  1. What can I do on a daily basis to notice when and how Jesus draws near?
  2. What holds me back from telling Jesus "all the things"?
  3. How can I practice more radical honesty with Jesus?

1-26-25 Blessed Sunday of the Word of God!

Blessed Sunday of the Word of God!

The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (that's today) is dedicated to celebrating, studying, and sharing the Word of God.

Fun Fact: Pope Francis established the Sunday of the Word of God in 2019 in his Apostolic Letter “Aperuit illis.” This Latin title (which is also the first line) is Luke 24:45, "he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures." Pope Francis encourages all of us to enter into regular conversation with God through the Scriptures--as an Emmaus 90 pilgrim striving to pray with Scripture daily, you're already there!

Studies show that most Americans have given up their New Years' Resolutions by now. We're praying for you that in your daily prayer, study, and sharing the Word of God in your Pilgrim Groups, God will open your mind to understand the Scriptures and the ways that he is speaking to you personally through them.

We feel honored to get to be with you on this journey.

Everything you need for your Emmaus 90 journey including electronic Guidebook and Formation Sessions are available at our Emmaus 90 Pilgrim Page. Bookmark this site!

This Week in Emmaus 90

This week we continue to focus on Jesus drawing near, and we seek to recognize the ways he draws close to us and converses with us along the way.

Daily Prayer with Scripture

This week's Scriptures help us to converse with the Lord about how we can recognize him drawing close and speaking to us. Use the Prayer Prompt inside the front cover of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook with these Daily Scriptures

Our Next Formation Session

We're blessed to be joined by Fr. James Kubicki, SJ, spiritual director at St. Francis de Sales Seminary, who will help us to reflect on "How do I recognize him?" Join us live at 7pm on Thursday, January 30, or get the recording any other time at our Formation Sessions Page.

Last week Sr. M. Karolyn Nunes helped us with our Emmaus 90 practice: "Why Does Jesus Draw Near" by speaking on "How to put the conditions in our lives to recognize and have conversation with Jesus along the way."

Sr. Karolyn invited our Pilgrim Groups to discuss the following questions:

  1. What can I do on a daily basis to notice when and how Jesus draws near?
  2. What holds me back from telling Jesus "all the things"?
  3. How can I practice more radical honesty with Jesus?

How has it been going?

What do you desire?

Ask Jesus for this grace, and ask him to help you to start fresh.

If you've been on this journey

Today is our last day in the Christmas Edition. Tomorrow, we start the Emmaus 90 Guidebook! This is an excellent opportunity to refocus our efforts, and begin again.

(Extra)Ordinary Time

Entering into the liturgical season of Ordinary Time reminds us that growth in the Christian life is not only found in special seasons, but in everyday life. Every day offers the opportunity to live in friendship with God, learn to recognize Jesus drawing near, and grow as an intentional disciple seeking to live the mission--the adventure--to which he invites you.

What a joy to be on this pilgrimage of hope with you! Invite a friend to join us, and 'come further up, come further in!'

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week's story comes from anonymous pilgrim:

I've been so stressed and pushing so hard, that I've been disconnected from people I love and my own feelings. I realized this morning that I've been acting like I have to get it together for God to love me and speak to me, like I'm stuck and out of luck because I can't focus enough. Today's prayer and Scripture (Isaiah 62) helped me to remember that he delights in me, even now. Even if I can't get it together, he doesn't give up on me. He will be with me, even in this. I'm so thankful.

We LOVE this! Thank you so much for sharing.

This week's Scriptures continue to help us share our desires with God and also begin to understand God's desires for us. Use the Prayer Prompt inside the front cover of your Emmaus 90 Christmas Edition or Guidebook with these

Daily Scriptures.

1-5-25 Pilgrim Update: Blessed Epiphany of the Lord!

Blessed Epiphany of the Lord!

There's something about the magi that captures our imagination. They were watching, searching the skies, and they noticed the sign. They searched for the truth, for what it meant. Then, they travelled (who knows how far) without knowing for sure what they would find, or if they would find anything at all. They even had the humility to stop and ask for directions.

In response to their searching and desire, God gave them an encounter with the Child Jesus, come to save the world and draw us all into the love of the Trinity. And when they saw him, they fell on their faces in homage--a public acknowledgement of respect and paying allegiance.

What models of hope and faith the magi are for us! And what friends they must have become while encouraging each other along what must have been one of the most epic road trips ever!

May God help us all to journey together so well. And may we grow together as pilgrims of hope seeking Jesus in this Jubilee year!

Emmaus 90 Story

Each week, we share a story from one of our Emmaus 90 Pilgrims.

This week, a pilgrim submitted this story after Archbishop Listecki's Formation Session:

"I have been praying for many years for a deeper connection with my husband. Our discussion of tonight's formation session (Jan, 2, 2025) was more than I could have ever hoped for. God has done amazing things and let me see the man I knew existed in my husband. What a beautiful gift! We talked about our hopes, desires, and how we can pray for each other.  Thank you Jesus for this gift from our Parish and for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee! All of you!"

12-29-24 Pilgrim Update: Blessed Feast of the Holy Family

Blessed Christmas, Feast of the Holy Family, and opening of the Jubilee Year!

During these days between Christmas and New Year many of us find ourselves reflecting on what really matters. It's a time of taking stock:

  • What's most important in my life?
  • What's been going well?
  • What's been holding me back?
  • What do I want to be different next year?

Maybe you (like most of us) have set new year's resolutions before, but haven't been able to stick to them. For some of us, the feeling that we failed in the past makes us hesitant to try again or afraid to hope that this year could be different.

Real change comes from more than just trying harder. Growth in the spiritual life takes God's grace and a community walking with you.

This is why we've created Emmaus 90.

Over the next 90+ days, thousands of us will begin the Emmaus 90 journey, praying for each other and encouraging each other, as we ask Jesus to give us the grace to grow in relationship with him through daily prayer, formation, and community.

We're proud of you for courageously taking your first steps and we're praying for you that God gives you the grace you need this year.

May God help us all to live as pilgrims of hope in this Jubliee year!

"How is the Mass our

source and summit?"

We continue in our 3rd movement of our journey with the disciples on the road to Emmaus: recognize him in the breaking of the bread. We pray for grace to recognize Jesus truly present with us in every Mass.

Tonight we are blessed to be joined by Fr. Christopher Klusman, Director of the Deaf Apostolate, Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

Tonight, Fr. Christopher helps us reflect on the question "How is the Mass our source and summit?"

Click HERE to join us live at 7pm!

You do not need to have a zoom account to join.

You don't want to miss this one! Join us live at 7pm tonight, March 20th, or get the recording any other time at our Formation Sessions Page.

For Your Pilgrim Group

See Discussion Questions for your Pilgrim Group on p.12 of your Emmaus 90 Guidebook

Fr. Christopher also suggests the following questions for your pilgrim group discussion:

  1. What does it mean that we are having a National Eucharistic Revival? If you can, name 1 thing you like about it.
  2. Watch the video, “The Veil Removed.”   (Even if you have watched it before, it is worth watching again). Share 1 thing about how this video had/has impacted you about the Mass?
  3. What does it mean that the Mass is our “Source and Summit”?
  4. Is it difficult for you to understand that the Mass is “our Source and Summit”? If so, what makes it difficult? What might help you to overcome that difficulty?

Begin Again for Lent

  • If you've fallen away from our Emmaus 90 practices, now's a great time to begin again.
  • Let go what is passed and start today.
  • Consider asking someone to join you/your Pilgrim Group for Emmaus 90 this Lent!
  • We're happy to send them a printed Guidebook and welcome them to the journey.
  • You can still forward Fr. Malachy's Lenten Message to anyone who might be interested in joining us.

April 9, 2025:

Day of Reconciliation,

Reparation, & Fasting

Archbishop Grob has asked that we observe April 9, 2025, as a Day of Reconciliation, Reparation, and Fasting. On this day:

Thank you and God bless you,

Margaret and the Emmaus 90 Team

Jesus, please help us all to recognize you drawing close, speaking through Sacred Scripture, and truly present in the breaking of the bread at Mass. Please draw us, form us, and send us in your love to those around us. Amen.
